Cheat Lake Elementary School Counseling Department


The mission of the Cheat Lake Elementary School Counseling Department is to establish a safe, inviting, and positive school climate by providing a comprehensive counseling program which promotes academic, personal/social, and career development of all students through individual counseling, group counseling, and/or developmental classroom guidance in order to grow leaders one child at a time. The counselors at Cheat Lake Elementary School work with parents, teachers, and the community to advocate for and support all students in the school.


The vision of the Cheat Lake Elementary School Counseling Department is that each student will be given the opportunity to learn and utilize leadership qualities to promote the importance of being a good role model and making good choices. Each student will also participate in lifelong learning in academic, personal/social, and career domains.


The school counseling program believes:

  • All students can learn
  • School counselors are student-centered and advocate for all students
  • The counseling program should be data-driven
  • Technology is an important component in the counseling program
  • That school counselors consult with parents about community resources and referrals for at-risk students
  • All students have dignity and worth
  • All students have the right to participate in the school counseling program.
  • All students’ gender, ethnic, cultural, and racial differences as well as any special needs of the student are considered in the planning and implementation of the school counseling program and should have equal opportunities to achieve success, learn, and grow
  • All students will learn the meanings of perseverance and integrity and will develop skills and attitudes to promote these characteristics throughout their lives
  • All students deserve the opportunity to grow academically and socially/emotionally in a safe school environment while becoming college and career ready
  • The school counselors serve on school teams in order to advocate for students (SAT teams, IEP teams, PBS teams, etc.)


School Counselors:

  • Equip students with the skills necessary for them to achieve their career goals.
  • Utilize a team approach to eliminate barriers in school achievement.
  • Conduct activities that contribute to the development of a positive school climate.
  • Recognize students' individual abilities and assist them in maximizing their potentials.
  • Help students develop a healthy self-concept and an acceptance of individual differences.
  • Link programs with opportunities for students outside of the school.
  • Include the participation of teachers because of their direct involvement with students on a daily basis.
  • Foster a positive relationship between home and school.
  • Strive for professional excellence through continued study and participation in professional organizations and workshops.
